Rare & Important Clocks

c.1800 Animated Dutch Tall Case Clock

A fabulous example, 9.5 feet tall, by noted clockmaker Klaas Andriese, of Grouw, Holland. The Dutch, known for their world-wide trading by sea, often featured marine scenes in their artistic creations. This clock has a hand-painted facade, with the lower section displaying five ships that rock back and forth (with motion of the “waves” underneath) as the clock beats. You can see it here: video

The clock section, with two bells, strikes on the quarters and hour, and has a repeater function. The clockworks display the hours, minutes and seconds, month, day and date, and moonphase dial with additional display showing the number of days elapsed in the moon cycle.

Over two hundred years old, in highly original condition, it is a wonder that having survived numerous wars, floods and other catastrophes, that it remains intact; yet it does, and presents itself admirably and with dignity - and working perfectly!
